We pride ourselves on our long history of providing excellent and creative structural engineering solutions.
Brian graduated from the University of Alberta in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and earned a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1997. In the early years of his career, Brian worked for a geotechnical consulting firm, as a teaching assistant with the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Alberta, and as an engineer with the Centre for Engineering Research before completing his graduate studies in 1997. Since that time Brian has been with BPTEC Engineering, progressing from Design Engineer to a Principal of the firm.
Brian’s design expertise includes structural analysis and design of buildings as well as industrial structures. In addition to this expertise, Brian brings a sharp focus to practical and efficient design while respecting the overall needs of the project stakeholders. Over his career, Brian has been involved in numerous institutional projects such as the Medical Isotope and Cyclotron Facility and the Health Research Innovation Facility (HRIF East and West) at the University of Alberta both as a managing partner as well as design engineer.
Chuck is a Principal and Senior Bridge Engineer in the firm specializing in bridge conceptual design, preliminary engineering and project management. Chuck has been involved in the bridge and highway construction industry since 1993 and related engineering disciplines since 1996. His specialization also includes hydrotechnical and river engineering, bridge and highway geometric design, structure alternative’s assessment, benefit/cost and life cycle cost assessments.
Chuck has significant experience leading and managing multi-disciplinary teams on complex bridge and highway projects and has completed numerous level 1 and level 2 bridge inspections, bridge assessments and designs of standard bridge and bridge size culverts in Western Canada. Chuck has also led, managed or provided formwork and falsework design, erection engineering and temporary berms and cofferdam designs on several bridge construction projects.
John is Principal and Senior Building Engineer in the firm and has been practicing structural engineering for over forty-five years. His experience in structural engineering encompasses projects of many different construction types, functions, and project size and complexity. John’s depth of knowledge in structural systems and keen interest in new technologies and systems make him a valuable resource to the projects in which he is involved.
John’s design expertise includes new construction, modernizations and expansions, assessments, sign structures, shoring, and fall arrest.
John served as principal for the firm’s largest construction value project to date, the Edmonton New Remand Centre. The $568 million dollar project presented unique structural challenges such as poor soil conditions which led to the use of continuous flight auger (CFA) piles on the project. The project was one of the first to use the technology, which at the time was new to the Alberta market.
Ken is a Principal and Senior Engineer in the firm. His practice areas range from infrastructure planning, design, and construction; to industrial design and fall arrest engineering. His design expertise includes structural design, hydrotechnical design, river engineering, preliminary bridge engineering and bridge construction.
Ken’s strong client focus has built enduring relationships over his 30 plus years of practice with such organizations as the City of Edmonton, Alberta Transportation, and a host of private sector clientele. This vast experience has made Ken an invaluable technical reference within our office and to the larger engineering and construction sector.
Over his career Ken has had the privilege of working on a number of signature projects. Some of these include detailed design and hydrotechnical assessment of the Dudley Menzies LRT Bridge and assessments of major bridges including the High Level Bridge, 105 Street Retaining Wall, as well as the original Walterdale Bridge.
Alongside his notable capabilities in the bridge and infrastructure sectors, Ken also has extensive experience with design and troubleshooting of industrial structures and the design and installation of fall arrest systems.
Within the community, Ken is a Fellow with the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, and has been a longstanding member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mike is a Principal and Senior Buildings Engineer in the firm. He has been practicing structural engineering for over sixteen years and has been involved in the construction industry for over twenty. His experience in structural engineering encompasses many different types of construction and many different sectors. He has design and construction experience in steel, stainless steel, wood, concrete and masonry in projects ranging from small to large scale in the institutional, commercial, residential, and industrial sectors.
Starting with BPTEC Engineering in 2004, Mike has had the opportunity to be involved in signature projects such as the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and the Edmonton New Remand Centre, the firm’s largest project to date, with a contract value of $568 million. More recently, Mike has acted as the principal for another signature project, the AGLC New Warehouse in St. Albert, a 543,000 sqft liquor distribution facility.
Mike is also experienced in the structural condition assessment of existing structures. His assessment experience includes historic structures, such as the World War II Hangar 14 at the former Blatchford Field as well as more modern structures such as wood framed condominiums, pre-engineered steel buildings, conventionally framed steel and masonry structures, as well as concrete buildings and parkades.
Scott is a Principal and Senior Engineer specializing in bridge engineering. His key areas of expertise include preliminary engineering, detailed design, assessment and load rating evaluation, contract administration, and project management.
Scott began his career in the bridge and construction industry in 1987 working for Alberta Transportation’s Bridge Design section. Seven years later in 1995, Scott joined BPTEC as a design and field engineer, becoming a principal in 2000 where he continues to play a key role in the successful execution of a wide variety of bridge engineering projects
In addition to innumerable bridge projects across Alberta, signature projects of Scott’s include:
Colleagues and clients consider Scott to be a pleasure to work with, because of his technical standards and expertise, as well as his good nature and good humor. Scott shares his wealth of experience through mentoring of staff as well as providing periodic specification review for Alberta Transportation.
