In 2018, BPTEC Engineering conducted a structural assessment of Hangar 14, a relic from the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan of 1942-1943. This historic hangar, built during World War II, is a rare testament to the era, constructed with heavy timber due to steel shortages. Post-tensioning measures were introduced post-war to reinforce the trusses, making it a unique structural challenge. Our task was to assess the building’s current condition and long-term viability.
Hangar 14, now home to the Alberta Aviation Museum, stands as a unique historical monument, representing the challenges of wartime construction. The aim of this project was to preserve history while providing for the building’s relevance to future generations.
